The Religion of Workism Is Making Americans Miserable // Derek Thompson // “In the past century, the American conception of work has shifted from jobs to careers to callings—from necessity to status to meaning.

In an agrarian or early-manufacturing economy, where tens of millions of people perform similar routinized tasks, there are no delusions about the higher purpose of, say, planting corn or screwing bolts: It’s just a job.”

On Tour With Vince Staples, Who Says Making Music Is A Scam // Cam Wolf // ” ‘What do people want from you, from your show?’ ‘They want the same thing from everybody’s show: 30 seconds on Instagram and a T-shirt to wear later.’ ”

Why is J. Cole So Damn Regular? // DJ Booth staff // “He’s like a caveman in a mansion inviting everyone over to view the Picasso in his bathroom.” Watch and then perhaps view the new video Middle Child video.

African United Methodists Won’t Trade Bible for Dollars // Mark Tooley // “And then please hear me when I say as graciously as I can: we Africans are not children in need of western enlightenment when it comes to the church’s sexual ethics. We do not need to hear a progressive U.S. bishop lecture us about our need to ‘grow up.'”

To Read: Books

The Happiness Project // Gretchen Rubin // Audiobook // A creative jolt of ideas and stories, this fun book! It will keep you on your toes and evaluating your own habits and tendencies, while also giving practical habits to cultivate more joy into your own and others’ lives.

The Old Testament // I’ve been reading through the Old Testament/ While home from work with a migraine, I was able to read a large chunk of the book I’d been going through (Leviticus). For reading whole books of the Bible all the way through, I’ve been enjoying our Bibliotheca set, which includes all the books in the Bible. They’re beautifully substantial and well-made.

To Watch

Free Solo // We watched this after hearing about it’s Academy Award. It was stressful. And yet the storytelling and execution was so awe-inspiring in the storytelling and execution that you can’t look away.

Island Of The Hungry Ghosts // True/False Film Festival // What a gorgeously heartbreaking experience it was to watch this. Having the subject of the 4-year project on stage afterwards. answering questions, brought the story to life even more. Here’s a bit more on the film.

The Hottest August // True/False Film Festival // We really enjoyed this unique documentary, capturing views and vignettes of the people of New York City in the month of August, 2017.  It was captivating hearing the director work through questions she received afterwards. Here’s a piece our own Aarik Danielsen wrote on the film.

Transmissions from Iceland // Director Ryan Booth shared this gorgeous project recently: “I was cleaning up my site and stumbled across the doc I made about Lapsley in Iceland. Forgot about it. We shot in Jóhann Jóhannsson’s studio in Reykjavik and tromped around the country recording samples. Interestingly, Holly more or less quit music after.”

To Make

Borracho Beans // Made for our weekly church group gathering, It was a success. This recipie was more or less followed, but with Liquid Smoke instead of beer.

Raspberry-Rhubarb Banana Muffins // After making a bowl of gluten-free, sugar-free banana muffin batter—and before putting in the oven—I was itching for something to spice it up. Half a jar of raspberry-rhubarb jelly was the extra sweetness and punch they needed. (I make my own kitchen rules.)

To Cultivate

Texas Pride // Maybe this doesn’t actually need any further cultivation. March 3rd was the day to say…. Happy Independence Day to the state where we fell in love, where cacti and tacos and sunshine are in abundance, where my namesake, HEB, is the grocery store of the New Jerusalem.

Celebration Logs // March 3rd was also our one-year engagement anniversary, and the first person to remember was my mother-in-law. The way she keeps on top of important dates is pretty impressive, And commendable.

Generous Laughter // Baby laughter is so pure. Let the belly laughs flow, y’all.

Servant Leadership // “Student came to class today with his child due to no babysitter or anybody to watch her while he was in class. My professor NATHAN ALEXANDER said ‘I’ll hold her so you can take good notes!’
